This is a long overdue continuation of my Running Scared posts. I think many of the quotes in this chapter speak profoundly without my interjections. Here are some of them:

Worry and anxiety think more information will help. The truth, of course, is that it won’t. In fact, if you knew what tomorrow would bring you would probably stay in bed. But put that aside for the moment. The deeper issue is that we still think God is a little stingy [....] When we actually investigate the Scripture, we find that God is not holding back. He reveals himself graciously, without reservation, opening his very heart to us. If we think otherwise, if we think he is holding out on us, then we are getting trounced in the spiritual battle (138).

We fight fear by loving another person, right now. Sometimes we are anxious about the future because there is no larger agenda that occupies us in the present. Love, however, is an expansive agenda (139).

There is one bit of data that worriers never factor into their false prophecies. It is this: We will receive grace in the future (140).

When King Jesus ascended into heaven and took his rightful place on the throne, the coronation ceremony was unlike any other. While earthly kings received gifts, Jesus gave gifts. More specifically, he gave a gift. He poured out his Spirit on his people. When someone is full of “grace and power” (Acts 6:8), that is the same as saying that the person is full of the Holy Spirit (Acts 6:5) [....] To receive grace is to receive the Spirit; to receive the Spirit is to be given the kingdom of the Spirit; to receive the kingdom of the Spirit is to receive everything imaginable under the reign of King Jesus, including: Love, Joy, Adoption as God’s Children, Patience, Gentleness, Power to fight sin, Goodness, Freedom, Power to serve others, Self-control, Faithfulness, Presence of God, Fruitfulness, No condemnation, Promise of future perfection, Peace, Truth, Wisdom, The mind of God, Unity, Life (143-44).

[In the context of fearing a death by drowning]: It is enough to know that I will receive grace. I will know the presence of the Spirit and I will die, or be rescued, in a way that please the Lord (145).
